Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the former Deputy Governor of Plateau State, Prof. Sonni Gwanle Tyoden, as his body was laid to rest in his hometown of Pushit, Mangu Local Government Area.
Speaking during the funeral service held at the COCIN Headquarters Church, Jos, Governor Mutfwang expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Prof. Tyoden, describing it as a monumental loss not only to the Mwaghavul Nation and the people of Plateau State but also to Nigeria at large.
He eulogized the late academic and statesman as an outstanding scholar whose intellectual contributions helped reshape political thought and deepen democratic consciousness in Nigeria.
“Let me thank God for the privilege of knowing Professor Tyoden personally,” the Governor remarked. “I met him in 1984 when I was a student at the University of Jos. At that time, he was already a rising academic, and by the time I was graduating, he had become an Associate Professor. He was a brilliant scholar.”
Governor Mutfwang also reflected on their political journey: “We had the opportunity to work together politically. Though we later found ourselves on different platforms, our relationship remained cordial. His passing is indeed a great loss to our nation.”
In a moving appeal to the people of Plateau State, Governor Mutfwang emphasized the transient nature of life and the need for unity and reconciliation.
“I urge us all to appreciate the gift of life and to live it purposefully, to the glory of God and in service to humanity. Let us set aside our divisions. If anyone had issues with Professor Tyoden, can they still hold on to them now? If you did not forgive him while he lived, that burden is yours to bear. He is gone. Let us choose to live in peace with one another. May we all finish well and finish strong,” he said.
On behalf of his family, the government, and the good people of Plateau State, Governor Mutfwang extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved family, the Mishkaham Mwaghavul, and the entire Mwaghavul Nation. He prayed that God Almighty would grant his widow, children, and all loved ones the strength to bear this profound loss.
