Plateau State Governor, His Excellency, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has called on the newly inaugurated leadership of the Plateau Youth Council of Nigeria (PYCN) to embrace strategic reforms and adopt constructive engagement as tools to drive youth development across the state.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the PYCN leadership led by the Chairman Panan Dapar, Governor Mutfwang underscored the administration’s commitment to inclusive governance and the critical role of the youth in reshaping the future of Plateau State.
“You have come at a critical juncture in our state’s history. Your assignment is clear,” the Governor stated. “It is time to review and redefine the mandate of the PYC, from a reactive body to a proactive force championing development, empowerment, and advocacy for young people.”
Governor Mutfwang emphasized the urgent need for the Council to confront pressing challenges affecting young people, including substance abuse, youth unemployment, school dropouts, and the exploitation of underage girls.
“These are not just social issues, they pose a threat to the stability of our society,” he warned. “You must rise to the challenge and become the voice and vanguard of a new era of purpose-driven youth leadership. Let us create opportunities for vocational training, skills acquisition, and economic inclusion.”
The PYCN Chairman, Panan Dapar has earlier reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to promoting good governance and sustainable development across Plateau State.
“This leadership of the Youth Council is different,” he declared. “We are not, and will never become, an appendage of any political party. Our allegiance is to the youth of Plateau State, irrespective of political, ethnic, or religious differences. We are determined to lead with integrity and ensure that every young person feels represented and empowered.”
Dapar emphasized the importance of youth leadership in mobilizing communities and promoting peace and security at the grassroots level. He appealed to the government to consider rehabilitating and adequately equipping youth centers across the state, particularly the Azi Nyako Youth Center, to enhance their functionality and relevance.
He further disclosed that in addition to the Executive and Legislative arms and Zonal Coordinators, the PYCN has adopted an inclusive governance structure by incorporating representatives of other nationalities residing in Plateau State into its activities.
The PYCN Chairman also extended heartfelt condolences to the Governor over the recent tragic loss of lives and property in Bokkos Local Government Area.
