In a swift response to the recent tragic attacks on several communities in Bokkos Local Government Area, the Plateau State Government has donated relief materials worth millions of naira to victims, as part of efforts to provide immediate succour and mitigate their suffering.
The Secretary to the Government of the State (SGS), Mr. Samuel Jatau, led a high-powered government delegation to the affected communities on Sunday. During the visit, he reaffirmed the government’s resoluteness to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
Describing the attacks as “well-coordinated and deeply troubling,” Mr. Jatau stated that the Mutfwang-led administration, in collaboration with the Federal Government and security agencies, has already taken proactive steps to prevent a recurrence.
“The security of our people is a top priority,” he emphasized. “We are here not just to deliver relief items but to physically assess the level of destruction and demonstrate the government’s solidarity with the affected communities.”
He explained that the items donated were a token of support aimed at alleviating the immediate hardship faced by the victims, pending a more comprehensive and long-term intervention.
“We came to see things for ourselves. It is heartbreaking that in this day and age, innocent citizens can be so brutally attacked, their homes razed, and livelihoods destroyed. We want to assure our people that they are not alone—Governor Caleb Mutfwang stands with them,” Jatau said.
In addition to the relief materials, a medical team was deployed to the communities to provide free treatment to the wounded and address other pressing health needs.
The SGS also urged residents to remain vigilant and continue supporting the government’s peace-building efforts, while calling for unity and collaboration to overcome insecurity in the state.
Receiving the relief items on behalf of the victims, the District Head of Manguna, Mr. Alo Raymond, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the state government and security agencies for their timely intervention.
He praised Governor Mutfwang for his proactive leadership and appealed for increased security presence in the area, especially as the farming season approaches.
“As the rains begin, we appeal to the government to deploy more security personnel to our communities to enable our people return to their farms without fear. We are truly grateful for this gesture; these items will provide much-needed relief to our displaced people,” Raymond said.
Earlier, the Village Head of Hurti, one of the hardest-hit communities, recounted the horror of the attacks. He revealed that many residents were killed, several homes burnt, and over 1,000 people displaced. The assailants also looted food supplies and destroyed farming tools worth millions of naira.
Relief materials distributed included mattresses, sleeping mats, blankets, buckets, bags of rice, beans, and maize, as well as cartons of bathing and washing soaps, noodles, spaghetti, and other essential items.
